Bergsing City Librarian 6/20/90 minutes/June LIBRARIAN'S REPORT JULY 17TH, 1990 Board Appointments The City received six applications for the Library Board vacancies. We have not heard when the City Council sub-committee will interview the prospective candidates, but it is unlikely that any appointments will be made in time for your July meeting. Therefore, we are hoping that Trustees Blevins and Bacigalupi will plan to attend so you will have a quorum. Board Attendance Enclosed is the record of Board attendance during the first six months of 1990. This is requested bi-annually by the City Council. Election of Officers Usually the Board holds the annual election of officers at its July meeting. However, since there are two trustees on vacation, and two vacancies on the Board, it seems prudent to carry-over the election until your August meeting. Space Pianning Enclosed with this packet is a draft of the R.F.P. to be sent to library building consultants and architects. Mr. Escoffier wrote the document, and it was sent to the City Manager and the Public Works Director for their comments and suggestions. We would appreciate hearing any suggestions you may have, and then we request your approval to send it out. Library Budget The City Council approved the library budget as submitted. The Council has also approved salary adjustments for most positions in the library. With the start of the new budget and fiscal year, we will be moving ahead with a number of maintenance items. . . scraping and painting the trim around many of the windows; repairing the roof; repairing the front sidewalk; and finally, upgrading telecommunications for the Geac system. Unfortunately plans for the front landscaping are still on "hold" because of the drought. Friends of the Library The Executive Board of the Friends of the Library held a meeting of July 10th. They approved all the budget requests for 1990/91. Among other issues discussed were the Fall Book Sale dates, a fall newsletter, a general membership meeting, and a dues increase. Page 1 Park and Recreation Department Study The City Council granted your request to delete the "Library Expansion" issue from the survey scheduled for the Fall Recreation Bulletin. I have _ enclosed a copy of the memo and new format of the survey for your information. General Staff Meeting The summer general staff meeting was held on July 12th. Staff was updated on the budget, space planning and other projects in progress . The next staff meeting will be in late October and that is the meeting you designated as the time to announce the recipients of the Staff Recognition Awards . Therefore, in August, you will need to begin the process of soliciting nominees. Periodicals Selection The annual review of our periodical collection and the selection of new subscriptions was held in June. The list of new subscriptions is attached. Public Relations As part of the Library' s Long-Range Plan, the PR Committee has begun to investigate a new library logo. They are in the process of getting estimates from local graphic artists. The most popular idea at the moment is to feature the open book and leaves that are featured all around the outside of the Main Library. We ' ll keep you posted. Children' s Services The summer reading programs, "Where in the World is. . . " and "Take a Reading Break, " continued through the month. More and more footprints appeared leading children to great summer reading. Begin with Books During June, Cathy Somerton did 18 programs . She also purchased software for the Macintosh computer to print mailing labels for the Baby Book Bag follow-up gifts and for materials sent out to the preschools . Cathy will go on maternity leave in mid-August for a four month period. We have hired Silvia Boosten of San Mateo Public Library to fill-in for her. Silvia has five years of experience in San Mateo' s Children' s Department and several more years with the County Library. We welcome Silvia on July 17th. Easton Branch Michelle Barrese ( aka the BEEPLE) and Joan Giampaoli promoted the Summer Reading program at OLA. The BEEPLE stole the show to the delight of the children. Cathy Somerton is telling stories to the Preschoolers Tuesday mornings at the Branch. Joan Giampaoli is hostessing the Bedtime Story Hour on Wednesday nights at the Branch. Thirty two children attended the first two evenings. Both programs continue until July 28 . Page 2 PLAN/GEAC The three new personal computer/terminals have been set up for use as _ computers. This was done to test the PC' s and get staff oriented to them before wiring and cabling is done. our present plan is to wire and cable for two additional terminals ( 4 in all) , as well as for our new telecommunications lines. This will be done after the installation of Release 21 software, a program which will allow PLAN to add terminals and set up the on-line database. We anticipate that this present planning will allow cabling to fill our needs for the next two years . Reference Division The Literature Workshop held June 27 and 28 was a success. Presenters included: Al Escoffier, Joan Giampaoli, Sandy Gleichmann, Joan Manini , Tibi McCann and Donna Smith. All of the reference staff had a hand in the workshop either as presenters , bibliography compilers or tour leaders. Congratulations go to all who made this a successful event! Programs and Services June poetry readings had moderate attendance with 15 gathered to hear our Black barber, jazz musician and former D.J. Jym Marks read his poems. Steve Abbott returns to read in July and Gerald Locklin, will read on July 20th. Gerald comes to us through the generosity of the Friends of the Library, whose donation allowed Minotaur to qualify for matching funds grant from Poets and Writers, Inc. Charles Mitchells mixed media collection was on display in the Reference Room during the month. Library Volunteer Long term library volunteer, Connie Cooper died in June after a short illness. Connie was a library volunteer for eight years , working in the administrative offices. We miss her cheerful presence. librept7 PMB/jg 07/11/90 Page 3 STATISTICS FOR AAY`1990 u7 REGISTERED BORROWERS: Total Registered Burlingame Adults 11 , 845 Burlingame Children 2 , 243 Hillsborough Adults 1 ,893 Hillsborough Children 782 Non-San Mateo Co.
