Board of Trustees
Minutes
May 21st, 1991
The meeting of May 21st, 1991 was called to order by President
Robertson at 4:30pm.
Trustees Present: Benson, Cannon, Robertson & Taylor
Trustees Absent: Blevins
Staff Present: Mrs. Patricia Bergsing, City Librarian
Mrs. Judy Gladysz, Library Secretary
Alfred H. Escoffier, Asst. City Librarian
Also Present: Carol Tanzi, Burlingame Resident
M/S/C (Taylor/Benson) unanimously to approve the payment of City
checks and Special Fund checks.

The Minutes were approved as written and ordered filed.
a. Letter from the Peninsula Community Foundation: Mailed in
packets
b. Acting Secretary Cannon read a thank you from the City
Librarian to the Burlingame Lions Club thanking them for
their donation because of the good services of Leonard Ma.
c. Acting Secretary Cannon read another thank you note from a
_ group who has been using the California Room under the
guidance of Barbara Mendelson.

d. She read still another letter from Carlisle Nelson wherein he
expressed his concern for defacing books.
e. Acting Secretary Cannon read another thank you letter from
AARP thanking the Burlingame Library Staff for enabling
them to use the Community Room to help Senior Citizens
with their income tax forms.

Librarian's Report;
Librarian Bergsing reminded the Board members that.there will be a
Council Study Session regarding the Budget on June Sth, if anyone cared
to attend.
Volunteer luncheon invitations were passed out to the Board
members.
Trustee Cannon asked if the new security system used magnetic
strips. Mrs. Bergsing said yes. Trustee Cannon then asked if all the
books needed to be converted to accommodate the new system. Mrs.
Bergsing explained that the library had been using magnetic strips for
several years since the Magnavox Company had gone out of the security
system business and discontinued making magnetic tags. Both systems
operate on the same principle.
Trustee Taylor inquired about the Circulation Desk remodeling. Mr.
Escoffier explained the plans for reworking the area. Trustee Cannon
asked if the money was available and Mrs. Bergsing said yes, it is in the
current capital outlay budget.
Trustee Cannon said shc: was very pleased with the new brochures,
stationery, logo, etc. She said they are "really classy."
Trustee Cannon said she will miss the "Weekend Library Line" that is
being canceled because of a lack of funds.
Mrs. Bergsing said she doesn't know when the City Council will
be reviewing the study done by Cynthia Ripley however she will keep
them posted. Some discussion followed.

a. The Budget Request letter to the Friends had been mailed in the
packets. After reviewing the request, M/S/C (Taylor/Benson)
to approve the letter as written.
b. Librarian Bergsing requested that the Volunteer and Staff
Recognition funds be replenished. M/S/C (Cannon/Benson)
that the funds be taken from the Special Fund.
c. The Board members looked at the pictures of the Pasadena
Public Library and were very impressed.
Trustee Robertson welcomed Carol Tanzi to the meeting.

The meeting of May 21st, 1991, was adjourned at 5:30pm. The next
meeting is scheduled for June 18th, 1991 at 4:30pm in the California
Room.
