Review Request for Safer Crosswalk and astreet Light at Recreation Center - Burlingame
Avenue at Anita Road
Mr. DelLaway advised that this connission inthe past installed road narkings and asked thePolice Departnent (P.D.) to nonitor the speed.
Correspondence from the City of San l,Iateo wasdistributed regarding a similar problem onBarroilhet where they are usinq trafficcontrols other than Stop signs to reducespeeding. An iLLuminating street light costs
$4,000 and a Stop sign $4oo-$5o0. comm. Evansasked the cost of a flashing light for bothdirections; per llr. Dellaeray, S3,OOO.
From the floor: Carol Nowlin distributed herLetter to the commissioners regardingattendance at the Recreati.on Center. Thisweek, betueen I a.m. and 10 p.m., they had 350visitors/day. She stated this neighborhood isa high irnpact area. Burlingame Avenue is arrrace!'/ayri; there are also grammar and highschool students present, and speeders do notstop or even slow down for foot traffic. She
recomnends a stop sign and crosswalks. AIso,
Employees of the Rec. Center want a Stop sign.For the sunmer it is estinated that there wiLlbe 800+ visitors/day at the center.
Mike Liberty drafted and circulated a petitionfor a Stop sign and commented on the great
number of supporters at this rneeting. Hestated that times have changed, there is a

baby boom now. Blinking lights won't stop orslow dorrn speeders, only a Stop sign wilJ-.l,!r. Liberty stated he crosses at this inter-section, and cars don't stop for his fanily.
Tony Mendoza, resident for four years, claimstraffic from tennis courts also heavy and fast
and does not see P.D. monitoring here.
Comments from the floor were closed. Conm.
Amoroso stated that he agrees that a Stop sign
and crossrralks are needed here and red curbingat the corners. It was moved and seconded
(comm. Norton/Preger) to reconmend to cityCouncil the installation of Stop signs andcrosswalks for each direction of Burlingame
Avenue at Anita Road and red curbing at thecorners; unanimously approved by the
Cornmission. It was then moved and seconded
(Comm. Amoroso/ Karp) to install an il1u-ninating street light at this intersection toimprove visibility at night r' unanirnously
approved by the Conrnission.
Request for 3-Way Stop Signs at Quesada and
Trousda Le
Sgt. I{cDonne1l stated that this intersection
should not have 3-way Stop si.gns for a 24-hourperiod when the problen is for only a shorttine, and there are alternate routes avail-able. Comm. Evans recommends a Stop sign here
due to the awkward situation. Comm. Pregeragreed. It was noved and seconded (Comm.
Karp/Norton) to deny this request; approved bythe commission by a 3-2 vote; conns. Evans and
Preger opposed.
Request for Green Zones and/or Dleters oncadillac way
From the floor, Kevin Miller of Rector MotorCo. further explained problem of employees and
apartment dwellers parking for long periods oftime in 2-hour spaces adjacent to hisbusiness. His custoners who were surveyed
complained about the lack of parking here. Hehas even offered off-street parking to his
employees t ith no success. Since the P.D. hasbeen monitoring the area, the situation isbetter.

Mr. Dellaway stated that even with green
zones, enforcenent is the only answer which isalleviating the problem no!r; so adding green
zones would not help the situation further.sgt. ucDonnell agreed.
comq. Preger does not reconmend green zones;
enforcement is the only issue. Conm. Amoroso
suggested that the valet parking sign shouldbe removed from the street and reconmended
P.D. enforcement. sgt. ltcDonnell clarifiedthat enforcement is deternined by uorkload.
They wiJ-l continue to monitor as rrorkloadpermits. It was noved and seconded (coru0.
Karp/Amoroso) to move this to an Action iten;it was subseguently moved and seconded (conn.
Evans/Preger) to request that the Police
Department continue to monitor this area and
deny the request for green zones; unanimously
approved by the conmission.

1 comm. Evans advised Mr.Rollins Road look good.
From the floor, DIr. Sonenstein stated there is linitedlegal- parking here so the result is perpendicuJ,arparking. However, since this is a cul-de-Eac, trucks
have problems maneuvering here, as well as elderly
neighbors who nust back out of their driveways. He
reconmends red zones between driveways. There is a 10-12
foot space, a 20 foot space and a 22 fooL space. AIso,there is an overnight parking problem. This norning
there were 23 cars parked there.
comm. Evans stated that he lrould like to view this site
before the next meeting. It was moved and seconded
(Conm. Evans/Amoroso) to move this to a Discussion Item
next meetingi unaninously approved by the Conmissl-on.

Sgt. llcDonnell stated that he has subnitted anapplication for a grant for a radar trailer. It can be
used for traffic counts and will be a visible response to
requests for speed nonitorinq.
