CALL TO ORDER. 7:00 p.m. by Chairman Evans.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG. Led by Sgt. Haseleu.
ROLL CALL. 7 of 7 Commissioners present.
CURRENT BUSINESS.
4.1 ACTION ITEMS.
4.1.1 Minutes of October 10, 1996 and November 14 1996 approved as
submitted by the Commission.
4.1.2 Election of Chairman and Vice Chairman for 1997
It was moved and seconded (Comm. Mayer/Simonetti) to elect Comm.
Evans Chairman for 1997; unanimously approved by the Commission. It
was then moved and seconded (Comm. Simonetti/Mayer) to elect Corffn.
Auran Vice Chairman for 1997; unanimously approved by the Commission.
4.2 DISCUSSION ITEMS.
4.2.1 Request to Reroute SamTrans Buses from Ray Drive to Trousdale Drive
Petitioner was not present. Comm. Laks-Harber had received a call from
the petitioner who stated these buses go too fast for having children
present. Sgt. Haseleu spoke to SamTrans and they agreed to slow down
these school buses. There have been no accidents and the buses use this
route only twice a day. It was moved and seconded (Comm.
Simonetti/Mayer) to move this item to an Action Item now; unanimously
approved by the Commission. Further discussion ensued. It was moved
and seconded (Comm. Simonetti/Mayer) to deny this request; unanimously
approved by the Commission.
4.2.2 Request for Speed Bumps on Fox Plaza Lane
Petitioner was present. Mr. Dellaway brought a copy of Safeway's plans
for their expansion adjacent to Fox Plaza Lane. Ground breaking is about
a year away. The plans are still being modified, and the City will request
Safeway to include a sidewalk along Fox Plaza l-are. Discussion ersued as
to interim safety measures. Sgt. Haseleu doesn't like using speed bumps,
but agrees something is needed to alleviate risk of a pedestrian accident at
a

the mall exit especially because of the children present. Mr. Dellaway
suggested a "Pedestrians Only" marking approximately 5-feet wide outside
the exit since the lane is too rurrow to post signs or to add curbing. It was
moved and seconded (Comm. Aurar/Simonetti) to move this to an Action
Item now; unanimously approved by the Cornmission. It was then moved
and seconded (Comm. Auran/Simonetti) to deny the request for speed
bumps; approved by the Commission by a 6-1 vote (Comm. Mayer
dissenting). Chairman Evans favored Mr. Dellaway's recommendation and
advised this will be an Action Item at the next meeting.
From the floor, the petitioner advised that exiting the driveway is difficult
when a tall vehicle is parked adjacent blocking view of cross traffic.
Comm. Amoroso agreed with seriousness of problem. Mr. Dellaway
recommended red zones to remove parking to the left of the driveway since
height limit signs in a residential area are unsightly. This will be an Action
Item at the next meeting.
INACTM ITEMS. None.
NEW BUSINESS.
6.1 Request for Disabled Parking Place at 850 Burlingame Avenue
From the floor, Parlc/Recreation Director John Williams stated that although they
have a parking lot, it is for the staff and they have grown with the addition of the
Park Departnent. Sgt. Haseleu advised a lot of senior citizens use the Recreation
Center. Mr. Dellaway advised that the sffeet is too narrow for a Disabled Parking
space, especially since it's on a bus route. A disabled driver would exit on the
street side which is dangerous. Comm. Mayer suggested making all four spaces
in their front parking lot disabled spaces. This will be a Discussion Item at the next
meeting.
7. INFORMATION ITEMS.
7.1 Mr. Dellaway advised that the rubberized railroad crossings that are forthcoming
will be at a higher cost because the Joint Powers Board wants new rails installed
at the same time.
Comm. Auran mentioned that the U.S. Post Offrce lawn is expansive on the l,orton
Avenue side, yet they provide no parking for customers. He suggested that ttre City
might want to lease that space to provide more parking. Also, it was suggested to
build parking expansions atop present parking lots.
